Profile

 Dr. Paula Alexandra Lopes

Paula A. Lopes is a lipid researcher. Her background and experience comprise intensive investigation at the Biochemistry field combined with a great passion for science. Paula A. Lopes’ career aims at identifying mechanism-based molecular targets for obesity therapeutic and neurodegenerative diseases intervention using disease models (genetic and diet-induced), genomics and DNA-based approaches for lipid metabolism regulation and inflammation. The main focus stands on cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate adipose and neuronal cell fate, extending our mechanistic evaluation of biological systems from cellular to organism levels. The ultimate goal is to control gene expression and signalling networks involved in cell differentiation and proliferation, based on genetic susceptibilities and cellular contexts, and to exploit novel therapeutic strategies to counteract neurological disorders (such as Alzheimer’s disease) and obesity onset.
